# Can grandparents get custody through youth protection?

Under Québec’s Youth Protection Act, the Director of Youth Protection (DYP) must prioritize placing a child with family members, including grandparents, when it serves the child’s best interests. Sections 52 to 54 and 91 LPJ authorize such placements when the parents are unable to care for the child safely. The DYP evaluates the grandparents’ ability to provide stability and meet the child’s emotional and physical needs. If appropriate, the court can issue an order confirming the child’s placement with them as a long-term living arrangement.
