# Can I keep my inheritance in a divorce?

In Québec, an inheritance received during marriage is generally excluded from the family patrimony and remains your private property if it is kept separate. Under C.c.Q. arts. 415–418 and 450–453, only assets like the family residence, vehicles, and pension rights are shared. However, if inherited money or property is used to improve or buy shared assets, its value may become partially divisible. To preserve exclusion, keep inheritance funds in a separate account and document their origin clearly.

C.c.Q. art. 415–418, 450–453; Divorce Act, s. 15.2
