# Does a new spouse or partner affect support in Quebec?

It depends on which support you mean. Child support is owed by the child's own parents in proportion to their means, so a new spouse or partner does not take on that obligation, although a parent's overall financial situation can be relevant to the calculation. Spousal support is more sensitive to a change in relationship: because it is based on needs, means, and circumstances under article 587 of the Civil Code of Québec, a recipient's new relationship—and any resulting change in their needs—can be part of what a court weighs if support is reviewed, and variation is available under section 17 of the Divorce Act where circumstances change. Whether a new partner actually affects support is fact-specific and best assessed with advice.
