# How does the parental union regime affect common-law couples in Quebec?

The parental union regime, created by the Act to reform family law and establish the parental union regime (L.Q. 2024, c. 22) and added at articles 521.20 to 521.42 of the Civil Code of Québec, changed the landscape for common-law parents. Since June 30, 2025, it automatically applies to de facto partners who become the parents of a common child and live together, giving them protections that previously applied only to married and civil-union spouses—notably a parental union patrimony and protections over the family residence. It does not apply to childless couples, and it is narrower than the rules for married spouses. Because the in-force date and the transitional rules governing which existing families are covered are important and recent, they should be confirmed with a lawyer for your situation.
