How is spousal support calculated in Quebec?
In Québec, spousal support is determined under articles 585–587 C.c.Q. and sections 15.2 and 17 of the Divorce Act. Courts consider each spouse’s needs and means, the length of the marriage, their roles and contributions, and any loss of earning capacity. Judges often consult the non-binding Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines to determine ranges of amount and duration. The goal is fairness and self-sufficiency, not income equalization
