# What should I expect, and how should I prepare?

The consultation is an opportunity to give the lawyer an overview of your situation, identify urgent concerns or deadlines, clarify what you want to achieve, and discuss possible next steps. The lawyer may ask about the people involved, the history, any existing agreements or court orders, and any upcoming proceedings.

To prepare:

- **If you have an approaching court date or deadline, say so at the very start of the meeting.**
- Write down your main questions.
- Bring the documents most relevant to your concerns: court documents, agreements, important correspondence, financial documents if money is in issue.
- Note a short chronology of key dates.

**Bring what you have.** You do not need a complete file to have a useful first meeting.
