# What factors determine whether or not the DYP will intervene once a report is received?

When a report is made, the Director of Youth Protection (DYP) determines whether to intervene by assessing if the child’s security or development is compromised. Under ss. 38–39 of the Youth Protection Act, the DYP examines the seriousness, frequency, duration, and context of the reported facts, the parents’ ability and willingness to correct the situation, and the availability of community resources. The DYP also considers whether immediate protection or court action is required. If the situation does not meet the legal threshold, the report may be closed or referred to other social services.
