A group of lawyers from Goldwater, Dubé recently participated in a lunchtime discussion presented by the Family and Youth Law Committee of the Université de Sherbrooke. **Me Emily Abud**, a young lawyer who co-founded the committee during her university years, was among them.

"Since I initiated the creation of this committee myself, I thought it was important to offer it some of my time now that I am a lawyer. Unfortunately, family law often goes under the radar in universities. It is quite rare to be able to attend events with professionals in this specialization of law," shares Me Abud.

The students' questions varied, ranging from the significant emotional burden associated with this practice, to the firm's key files, to the involvement of lawyers in files related to the Director of Youth Protection (DPJ). One thing is certain, the complementary profiles of the young lawyers who accompanied Me Abud, namely **Me Audrey-Anne Laforme** and **Me Véronique Jacques**, who between them have more than twenty years of experience in law, allowed the students to have all their questions answered.

#### **A committee that meets a need**

In many law schools, very little time is dedicated to the practice of family law.

"From my first year of university, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. But unfortunately, there weren't enough resources to learn more about this practice," says Me Abud. "There were committees on business law, criminal law, for example, but there was no committee that dealt with family law."

As she began her year as president of the law school's executive committee, Me Abud and her peers quickly noticed the great interest of students in not only taking part in the activities of such a committee, but also in getting involved in it. After several steps, the committee was finally created with the objectives of promoting the [practice of family law](https://goldwaterdroit.com/en/services/family-law-lawyer) and building bridges between students and professionals in this field.

In its first year of existence, the committee has been very successful: informative video clips, podcasts, conferences with lawyers and a family law cocktail are some examples of the various activities organized by the committee.

During the lunch-time chat, several questions also concerned the law firm and the various advantages of working there.

"At Goldwater, Dubé, thanks to the firm's strong reputation and that of **Me Anne-France Goldwater**, the senior partner, we are fortunate to have cases that are out of the norm. The support of senior lawyers and the human resources and accounting departments make it an incredible place to do your internship."

Since 2017, Goldwater, Dubé has been recruiting exclusively with the help of the Course aux stages, and is one of the only firms specializing in family law to participate. This race, well known to students, allows students to land an internship after passing the bar exam. For Goldwater, Dubé, it is an excellent way to meet the best law students from across Quebec, which is why all of the firm's interns are chosen during this notable event.

"For students, it is really good practice to interview with several large firms, it allows them to become familiar with the process," adds Me Abud. "Usually, students who take part in the Course au stage are satisfied with their experience and are better prepared for their upcoming law interviews."

From her role as an involved student who created a committee dedicated to the practice, to her new profession as a lawyer who volunteers her time to this same committee, it is safe to say that Me Abud is still nourishing her goal of putting family law on the university map.

"In family law, I feel that I can really make a big difference in people's lives, at the heart of their family life," concludes Me Abud. "It is a law where we are constantly in contact with our clients to support and help them. I sincerely hope that we can break down the stereotype that family law is a feminine practice and that students will finally be able to discover the great value of this specialization, namely the protection of children and families in Quebec."
