**Marie Anne Martin** is the Managing Partner of Goldwater Droit, where her practice covers the full range of family law litigation matters, from complex custody disputes, near-intractable parental conflicts, and sophisticated valuation and partition of disputed family assets.

She has appeared before the Superior Court and the Quebec Court of Appeal in divorce and separation proceedings, contested custody and support matters, conflicts over cohabitation and marriage contracts and asset and property division. Her custody work regularly involves high-conflict parenting disputes, adducing psychological expert evidence, and cases where a child’s expressed preferences must be scrutinized against the family dynamics that may have shaped them.

Marie-Anne has developed a particular focus on complex financial disputes arising from separation and divorce. Her practice frequently involves high-conflict matters concerning the unequal partition of family patrimony, spousal support, the contestation or homologation of agreements, hidden or disputed assets, and financially sophisticated negotiations and litigation

As Managing Partner, Marie Anne leads Goldwater Droit's day-to-day operations and works alongside the Founding Partner to shape the firm's strategic direction.

Before law, she completed a B.Sc. in Pharmacology-Physiology at the Université de Sherbrooke in 2011. That scientific training informs her approach to expert evidence. That scientific training continues to inform her approach to expert evidence, as well as her conscientious and rigorous method of practice. She approaches files with discipline, structure, and a reasoned analytical framework, with careful attention to detail and preparation. She then earned her LL.B. at the Université de Montréal in 2015, articled under the supervision of Me Marie-Hélène Dubé (now Justice Marie-Hélène Dubé, J.S.C.), and joined the Quebec Bar in 2016. She is a member of the Quebec Family Law Lawyers Association (AAADFQ) and mentors articling students within the firm.

She works in French and English.

If not a lawyer, she would have become a psychiatrist. She has a talent for reading family conflicts the way a clinician reads symptoms, and prepares files with the rigour of someone trained to hold her own with the experts testifying in them.

##### LITIGATION & PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

- [_Droit de la famille — 26135 (2026)_](https://canlii.ca/t/kjg80) - Represented the mother in a complex parenting, child support, and co-ownership dispute involving a child with special needs and significant conflict surrounding parenting arrangements and the family residence. Successfully maintained the child’s primary residence with the mother based on the child’s expressed wishes and best interests, resisted the father’s demand for a return to shared parenting, and obtained detailed findings regarding child support, special expenses, and the parties’ financial obligations following the breakdown of the relationship.
- [_Droit de la famille — 26412 (2026)_](https://canlii.ca/t/kkb8p) - Represented the wife in a high-conflict divorce proceeding involving the partition of substantial family assets, the valuation of a medical professional corporation, complex insurance and tax issues, spousal support, and parenting disputes concerning two children. Successfully advanced detailed arguments regarding the valuation of corporate-held insurance policies and latent tax liabilities, obtained significant compensatory and support awards, and secured favourable findings on contested issues relating to the family residence, family patrimony, and the liquidation of the matrimonial regime,
- [_Droit de la famille — 25203 (2025)_](https://canlii.ca/t/kbnzz) - Acted for the defendant in a Superior Court application to oppose wage seizure and enforcement of family law debts. The plaintiff sought recovery of support obligations pursuant to a 2014 consent agreement. Marie Anne successfully argued that the defendant, as a discharged bankrupt, was released from the disputed debt and the seizure should be quashed. The Court found the defendant's bankruptcy discharge extinguished the obligation, and the plaintiff lacked standing to enforce the debt given his own subsequent bankruptcy. Wage seizure order cancelled.
- [_Droit de la famille — 231391 (2023)_](https://canlii.ca/t/jzmnx) - Appeared for the father in a contested custody and child support dispute involving two young children (ages 4 and 21 months); obtained equal shared parenting time despite the mother's opposition based on the children's young age and the father's atypical police work schedule, and successfully argued for income imputation against the mother who had voluntarily reduced her work hours.
- [_Droit de la famille — 191664 (2019)_](https://canlii.ca/t/j2103) - Advocated for the mother in a custody and child support dispute following the children's return from Argentina under the Hague Convention; secured shared custody, obtained a substantial upward departure from Quebec child support guidelines based on the father's $6.5M+ asset base, and was awarded an additional provision for costs.
- [_Droit de la famille — 192359 (2019)_](https://canlii.ca/t/j3mrw) - Served as counsel to the father in a contested custody modification proceeding where the mother sought to replace a decade-long shared custody arrangement with exclusive custody based on the 14-year-old twins' expressed wishes; successfully maintained shared custody after the court accepted the expert psychologist's recommendation that the children's desires were influenced by a loyalty conflict and that continued equal parenting time was essential for their development.
